Agreement on running Lebanon
NZPA-Reuter Beirut I Lebanese authorities and I the Palestine Liberation Organisation led by Mr Yasser Arafat have reached agreement on governing relations between them and on ending tension in southern Lebanon, Palestinian sources have said in Beirut.
They said the two sides had agreed on the implementation of the 1969 Cairo accord which regulates the presence of Palestinians in Lebanon. The sources said that a formula had been reached on an outstanding issue of dispute: the number of armed men permitted to defend Palestinian refugee camps against possible Israeli attack.
No details were given. The Lebanese had previously argued that the number of defenders should not exceed seven per thousand of the I refugee population, while the Palestinians had argued that this figure was too small. According to the sources, a joint Lebanese-Syrian-Palestinian Co-ordination committee wili also seek to end the tension in southern Lebanon, where Rightists have been fighting against an alliance of Palestinians; and Leftists. j
