Australia set for victory
NZPA Northampton The Australian cricketers went into the final day of their match against Northamptonshire today in sight of only the third win of the tour. At 99 for one in their second innings, they had an overall lead of 191, and only a major tournament could save the Eng iish county side from defeat. The Australians owed their position of strength to two fine performances yesterday, from Len Pascoe and lan Davis.
Pascoe produced some of the most hostile pnd accurate fast bowling seen all summer to take six for 68 off 25 overs, leaving Nortiiamptonshire all out for 236 in reply to the tourists’ first innings total of 326. His victims included David Steele, for a duck. McCosker and Davis put on 73 together in Australia’s second innings.' the highest opening partnership on the tour, and coming straight after the 50 stand they shared in the first innings, it gave Greg Chappell renewed hope that some sort of reliable opening combination is being forged. McCosker made 39 and Davis was not out on 58.
The pick of the Australian batsmen in the first innings were Greg Chappell, with a tour-best unbeaten 161. and David Hookes, with an aggressive 53.
