Talks stop strike

The threat of industrial action by officers of the Stewart island ferry Wairua has been lifted. The officers refused last week to take the vessel to sea unless they received a “hard-lying” allowance. But the threat was lifted yesterday after a meeting on board the Wairua between the officers, the Public Service Association, the Ministry of Transport, and the State Services Commission.

It is believed the officers agreed to defer strike action while negotiations continue on the allowance.
