Fewer enrol at high schools
More than 4300 pupils will enter the third form in Christchurch State secondary; schools next year. Enrolments opened on Monday and will close on July 25. Schools hope to notify parents of a child’s acceptance about midAugust. In keeping with trends throughout New Zealand, enrolment numbers were lower than in previous years, said the regional superintendent of the Department of Education in Christchurch (Mr R. U. Roy). The decline was expected to continue until the early 1980 s, when secondaryschool rolls were expected to increase again.
Each school had its own neighbourhood, from which all applications for enrolment would be accepted, said Mr Roy. This arrangement had worked well in Christchurch. Every child was assured of a place in the school serving his or her area. Some areas were served by more than one school. Maps showing boundaries of school districts were available at primary and intermediate schools. There were no changes from last year, said Mr Roy.
1; Those wanting single-sex JI education would be able to ' apply for admission to Shiri ley Boys’ High School and i Avonside Girls’ High School > in the north and east, or > Christchurch Boys’ High • School and Christchurch Girls’ High School in the > south and west, said Mr Roy. Some schools would accept ■ a limited number of pupils I from outside their areas. : Parents who wished to enrol • children in such schools . should include with their ap- ; plication a letter explaining : their reasons for applying outside the area served by ■ their local school. If an enrolment was not
accepted by the preferred school, the application would be referred to the local school, said Mr Roy. If parents did not accept this decision, they could appeal to the school’s board of governors, whose decision was final.
Enrolments for the Four Avenues School for next year would be taken in the third term of this year. Parents who wanted their children to attend Four Avenues should first enrol with their local school, said Mr Roy.
