LIVING WITH WINE
One business of note in Picton to change hands recently, was the wine shop of Mr John. Black in High Street. The shop has been acquired by Villa Maria Wines and is the first to be wholly owned by the company in the South Island.
The purchase followed the recent acquisition by Villa Maria of Vidals, Hastings. The new shop, which has been refitted and refurbished, will be named “House of Wine” and will be managed by Mr Dan Summers.
Although the shop is owned by Villa Maria, it will continue to stock a wide range of New Zealand wines only, including chilled wines for the summer months. Mr Summers has some interesting plans for the business. He hopes to establish a “Living with Wine Club” in the district. The club would meet regularly, he said, for tastings and discussions. In this, he will co-operate with the Picton Brewers’ Club but the wine club will be run independently.
