$45,000 for shop and home at Pelorus
Since fire destroyed the tearooms and residence of the Pelorus Bridge scenic reserve several years ago, the area has been without canteen facilities to cater for picnickers and travellers. It has now been decided to build a three-bedroomed house for a caretaker and an attached shop, at a cost of about $45,000. This figure is well below earlier estimates of providing a tearooms there. One figure was $115,000 and a later modi-
fied proposal was for $75,000. Neither project attracted financial backing from the various local bodies involved. It is hoped to have the new building completed by Labour week-end. The new building will be funded by Marlborough local bodies and the Nelson City Council is to make a grant of $2OOO to match the Marlborough figure. This will draw a $2 for $1 Government subsidy and insurance from the old tearooms and a Government grant will
cover the balance of the project. The entrance to the “bottom camp” (pictured below) will be relocated behind the new building. The reserve, controlled by the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserves Board, comprises six cabins, about 12 caravan sites with power points and about 60 camp sites without power. The area is a particularly beautiful one set in native bush with wonderful swimming and fishing facilities.
