Drink curb by council

There should be no objection to the first four liquor licence applications from sports clubs on reserves land, the Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation committee said yesterday.

The clubs involved are the Hagley Golf Club, the Papanui Bowling Club, the High School Old Boys’ Cricket Club, and the Christchurch - Richmond M.S.A. Bowling Club.

But there should be limits on the drinking hours allowed. Some of the clubs had sought permission to start drinking at 8.30 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays during the summer.

• The committee said that drinking should be limited to 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., except for a cricket club, whose matches would stop later. Its hours would be 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Al! applications are subject to approval of the Liquor Licensing Commission, and council permission will be reviewed after a year.
