Nicol’s boot causes upset
PA Timaru The accurate boot of Doug Nicol carried South Canterbury to an upset 21-18 win over Manawatu in a nonchampionship rugby match at Fraser Park yesterday. The Ranfurly Shield holders scored three tries to one but Nicol scored 17 points with six successful kicks out of seven.
South Canterbury held a 12-0 advantage at half time after a lethargic performance by Manawatu and then withstood strong forward pressure by the visitors in the second half. Manawatu would have won but for a chronic bout of mis-handling by its second five-eighths and captain, Doug Rollerson, who dropped nearly as many passes as he caught. This limited the opportunities of the three-quarters and Manawatu trailed throughout the match. For South Canterbury Harvey King scored a try and Nicol kicked a conversion and five penalties. Manawatu’s points came from tries by Geoff Old (two), and Ken Granger, while Rollerson kicked two penalties.
