Blind bowlers on tour

The touring New Zealand blind indoor bowls team will make its Christchurch appearance this evening at Fernwood Hostel, Bristol Street.

This strong team of sightless bowlers is making a country-wide tour and requested strong opposition.

This it should have, as the Canterbury president (Arthur Hunt) has named a near-representative team from his association’s executive.

The team is Mrs I. Gale, V. Norris, J. A. Greer. A. E. Williamson (skip): Mrs J. Stewart, D. Thomas, G. L. Barnes and T. N. Austin (skip). The strong New Zealand blind team is S. Lambert (Auckland), H. Osborne. N. Mosen (both Wanganui) and L. Liddington (Waikato, skip); E. Winiata (Auckland). R. Musson (Southland), P. Brosnahan (Auckland) and C. Gray (Southland, skip). Pairs and fours will be played in the contest. On a more representative basis, two changes have been made in the Canterbury team to defend the A. S. Paterson Trophy

against Southland at Kearneys Road on Saturday. David Philpott, who played well in his only appearance, against South Canterbury, has to give way to Marie Watson, winner of this year’s Canterbury singles title. Mrs Watson has previously played in a Williamson Cup game.

Leon McLennan also returns — at the expense of Derek Thomas — after missing the South Canterbury game.

At the time, he was skipping Ken Avis to victory in the national workingmen’s club’s pairs championship. The full team is:—

B. Weir, R. G. Ludbrook, McLennan, Williamson (skip); Mrs Watson. L. Bellis, Barnes and Austin (skip).

The Town team to play Malvern next Wednesday

C. Tindall, Mrs B. Cone, B. Caldwell. E. E. Ashby (skip): Mrs M. Thomas. N. Morris. Mrs N. Warden, N. Packman (skip): Miss L. Mclntyre, Mrs T. Watkin, A. Brown, D. Watts (skip); G. Adam, Mrs N. Burrows. O. Tomlinson and L. Moody (skip).
