Tikumu’s letter

Dear Children, “X Marks the Spot,” a New Zealand book by Joan de Hatnel, will appear soon as a film on television. I hope that you all will see it and also read the book.

The book is outstanding. We become completely involved in the adventures of three children in a remote part of Fiordland. They are on their own there, with a mystery to solve, and they are without food supplies, tents, or hope of a speedy rescue.

Their problems as they struggle to survive make absorbing reading. There are times of tension and

of fear — and also of fun. The children are credible, behaving naturally, and can be irritable and quarrelsome as well as unselfish and brave.

Throughout the story we are made to feel the presence of the bush. Bird and plant life, and details of the rugged country, are faithfully observed, and make their presence a powerful reality. We experience with the three children the loneliness and danger of the bush, the mystery, and the beauty. The following story is an interview I had with Joan de HameL Tikumu
