NZPA Nounakchott (Mauritania) Polisario guerrillas armed with mortars and automatic I rifles attacked Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, i for 45 minutes on Sunday (night, but there were no im- ! mediate reports on how ’much damage had been done. i Several mortar shells [were reported to have dropped in the area of the Presidential palace. The Polisario rebels are fighting, with material help from Algeria, for the independence of the former (Spanish Sahara, which has been divided between Morocco and Mauritania. i Some 5000 to 15,000 of [the guerrillas are working in ! the desert, striking at Moroccan Army units or making quick stabs into Mauri tarian territory.
