Local lustre for cluster?
The new Brougham Street community housing cluster will probably be named after someone associated with Sydenham, rather than having a name connected with the British peerage. Earls Courts had been suggested by the Christchurch City Council’s housing and property division, but the Mayor (Mr Hamish Hay) suggested that a more appropriate name might be Allison Courts, after the late Mr Charles Allison, Mayor from 1908 to 1910 and a former Sydenham town clerk before amalgamation with the citv in 1903. Earls Courts had been recommended because of the nearness of Somerset Crescent and Brougham Street.
