Gifts for Fiji children
Readers of “The Press” have responded warmly to a story in the special Fiji issue of “Tuesday Travel” about the needs of a little group of children in the isolated village of Raki Raki. Books, pads, crayons, pencil, toys, and other gifts have been mounting up in my office during the month, making it obvious that Raki Raki will have one of the best equipped play centres in Fiji. Gifts have been received from people of all ages. A Papanui pensioner sent in $2 with a request that I personally buy something for the children; a parcel of books and other gifts was received from the pupils of Room 5 at Wairakei School; and another from young Craig Dickie “with love.” The Hari-
hari play centre wrote that it was considering adopting the Raki Raki centre. In the picture above, some Form II children of North New Brighton School and their teacher, Mrs F. M. Barnard, are shown looking at the gifts. The children (from left), Sarah McDougall, Trudy Andreassend, Judith Taylor, Angela Pule, and Kenneth Grave, collected several cartons of books and other material.
Many contributions were made anonymously, but a list of donors known will be printed in “Tuesday Travel” next month. In the meantime, a warm “thank you” to all concerned.
