Inquiry into Carlaw’s run
NZPA Sydney The Avondale trainer, Barney Meyer, has been told to be more specific in his riding instructions. Stewards opened an inquiry after Cariaw, in his first Australian start, ran third to Regalis in the Merrylands Handicap at Rosehill on Saturday. The inquiry was concluded at Canterbury on Wednesday. Carlaw, ridden by apprentice Rodnev Quinn, was a distant last of six runners entering the straight but finished three lengths and three-quarters behind the winner. Meyer told the stewards: “they ran the first 600 m in 36sec and "the last 600 m in 38sec. I would die a pauper in the gutter if I gave instructions for a horse to be ridden upside down like that.”
He said that rather than Carlaw finishing fast, the other horses were “coming back to him.”
The chief steward, Mr Jimi Meehan, said Carlaw, which has an arthritic complaint, would have to undergo a barrier trial and that a veterinary certificate, of fitness would be required before he could race again. Quinn was told to use more vigour in future and his master. Dick Horton, was told to be present, when riding instructions were given.
Golf.—Evonne Allen, of the Springfield Golf Club, Rotorua. New Zealand, maintained her consistent play to win the Air New Zealand Fiji ladies’ open golf tournament at Suva. She held off a challenge by Sherrill Sibun, of Titirangi, at the turn to come in one stroke ahead on 241.
