Nelson flying feat disputed
P A Invercargill A claim by a Nelson Aero Club crew that it was the first to circumnavigate the South Island in a day in a single-engine aircraft has been disputed by the Southland Aero Club. The Southland club’s chief flying insutructor (Mr P. J. Buckham) said that two Southland pilots successfully circumnavigated the South Island within daylight hours on June 22, 1976, Mr Phillip Kean, of Centre Bush, and Constable Craig Little, of Ohai, were in the air for
eight hours 36 minutes, and had three refuelling stops. They arrived back in Invercargill with about 20 minutes to spare. Mr Buckham said that Mr Kean and Mr Richard Lee attempted the same journey, which was unsuccessful, in 1975. The Nelson team of Mr Peter Bradley, Mrs Jaqui Barber, and Mr Graham Taylor, completed the latest attempt in eight hours 30 minutes flying time. Both the successful attempts were made in a Cessna 206 aircraft.
