Good start to chess

Christchurch Boys’ High! School, the champion team in “The Press” chess teams competition for the last four years, started the 1977 tournament on a successful note when its two teams in the A grade had convincing wins.

Christchurch has split its strength this year and the two teams might be in for some difficult matches when they meet the more experienced sides in their respective zones. Cashmere made a good start by beating Burnside. The score was two-all, with two matches needing adjudication. Cashmere gained the decision, 3|-2|.

St Andrew’s made a bold showing against Christ’s College, a school which has been represented in the final

for the last two years, but! Middleton Grange, a newcomer, found Hillmorton far too experienced. The B grade should provide an interesting competition. Heaton Intermediate, a school which has acquitted itself admirably since the tournament’s inception in 1971, started well by beating Hillmorton B. St Margaret’s held Linwood B to a draw and Cobham Intermediate, another newcomer, was not disgraced in losing to Burnside B. There was little between the players on the top two boards, but a lack of experience towards the end told against the Cobham boys.- John Anderson gained Cobham’s win on the bottom board. It was pleasing to note that schools seem to be making an effort to agree on
