N.Z. runner wins Aust. marathon
NZPA Melbourne A strong-finishing New Zealander, Graham Struthers, aged 26, yesterday won the Victorian Marathon Club marathon championship at Tyabb from the detending champion, David Byrnes, aged 26. The diminutive Aucklander, contesting his third marathon in only 13 weeks, clocked the good time of 2hr 2smin 26see in cold, windy conditions to win by 36 seconds from Byrnes, with Bob Guthrie, aged 31. a further two minutes back in third place. Struthers, coached by New Zealand Olympic marathon runner. Kevin Ryan, was a late accepter for the race when Hamilton’s representative, Bernie Vine, was forced to withdraw last week with foot trouble.
The New Zealand Dairy Board export clerk said “I am verysurprised I was able to run so fast as I caught a cold this week and hadn’t specifically prepared for the race. I only heard about it last Monady.” Struthers ran stride for stride With Byrnes to the 37km mark, where he broke away up a slight rise and finished too strongly for Byrnes over the final five kilometres.
However, the 33-year-old mother of three, Lavinia Petrie, stole the show with a magnificent Victorian record time of 3h- Orrdn 36sec. Placings of New Zealand competitors: G.
