Sydenham suffers K.O.
By
KEVIN TUTTY
There is always uncertainty about a knockout competition. So often the favourites tumble, and the second round of the Philips Cup national club hockey competition yesterday was no exception. I Sydenham-Cashmere, second in the Christchurch senior championship, went to Oamaru on Saturday to meet Oamaru. and stumbled against the determination of a country side. Sydenham this year has become known as the team that accepts its scoring chances. However, at the end of full time it found itself locked 0-all against Oamaru, and had only itself to blame after the |forwards wasted two open goals. In extra time Sydenham, grew desperate and Oamaru' more confident as it realised ;it had a chance to make the; third round. The first two, periods of extra-time passed ‘with no score and then! ■in sudden death extra-time; — with penalty strokes to; follow Oamaru was awarded, a penalty corner and Gordon; Brown, a North Otago repre-i sentative of long standing, scored the winning goal. Three games in Christ-; church finished as expected/ University beat Linwood United 4-0: Redcliffs beat; Woolston Working Men’s Club 3-0 and High School; Old Boys beat HarewoodBumside 1-0. University after drawing with Linwood 2-all on Satur-j day in a club game, made no'
'error about who was to win i yesterday. Barry Maister put i University ahead 15 minutes into the first half and then I Selwyn Maister scored a seciond goal from a penalty [stroke which many Linwood ■ supporters thought should not have been awarded. I It was awarded for breaking at penalty corners. Lin[wood had been warned several times and finally the umpire, Alan Scott made the only decision possible. Only a couple of minutes earlier the Linwood left wing, Tim Trevena-Brown was sus-
i 'pended permanently for back- : [chatting Mr Scott. Trevena-i ; [Brown was first given a tern-' iporary suspension but when! • [he continued to back-chat the' ! umpire, he was shown the! I i red card — a permanent sus- ■ [pension. These, dramatic few min-; i utes did nothing for the com-| posure of the Linwood team. I • I At half time players gesticu-l ! dated and shouted before; ■ they settled down to a ser[ious team-talk. ; The draw for the third , round will be made this • evening. It is likely there
■ will now be four pools of! [four teams and one South' [lsland team will travel to[ I the North Island. ' Results of yesterdays [games were: • I University 4 (B. J. Maisiter, S. G. Maister, A. Borren. ■N. Edmundson), Linwood [United 0. High School Old Boys 1 |(R. Ebert), Harewood-Burn-[side 0. Redcliffs 3 (A. Ineson 2, L. iMunt), Woolston Working' I Men’s Club 0. Oamaru 1 (G. Brown), Sy- ■ denham-Cashmere 0.
