Amberley craftsman honoured

A South Island craftsman. Mr Lawrence Ewing, of Amberley, has won a $250 merit award in the first Fletcher Brownbuilt Pottery Award, presented in the Auckland War Memorial Museum recently. His entry, a stoneware bottle, was one of 66 submitted by potters from Whangare: to Invercargill. The judge. Mr Les Blakebrough. an Australian potter and lecturer in ceramics, chose a potbellied stove in salt-glazed stoneware by a Wellsford potter. Mr John Anderson, as the winner of the $lOOO first prize. Another merit award for $250 was won by Mr Brian Gartside, of Ramarama. near Auckland. Mr Blakebrough said that he had been surprised by the volume of work produced in New Zealand.
