"Antlers or skill?”

Sir, — In reply to Mr Ford’s letter in which he makes the statement “we must all make some effort to shoot deer when and where possible to protect the sport of hunting,” I have to surmise that Mr Ford is not a sporting hunter and is not interested in preserving his sport. 1 cannot, help but feel that Mr Ford did not grasp the context of Ben Hope’s article. The article was trying to show people the sporting attitude with which many hunters approach the sport of hunting. Deerstalking as a sport does not entail the wholesale slaughter of every animal the hunter sees but rather the selective shooting of animals that he needs. Does Mr Ford consider helicopter hunting and the use of 1080 poison better alternatives to game management and being a sporting hunter? — Yours, etc., R. P. GIBBONS. June 7, 1977.
