F5000 doomed?

Australian motorsport commentators, quick to ridicule New Zealand when it threw out Formula 5000 this year and adopted Formula Pacific as its national racing formula, have changed their tune after a lacklustre F5OOO season in Australia, which is now the only country in the world with a Formula A'series.

Writing in the latest issue of “Wheels” magazine, David McKay, a respected Australian moWrracing journalist, said: “With all the talk about how good the New Zealand racing had been from people who should know, like Mike Hailwood, Australia’s persistence with F5OOO has to be questioned once again, particularly when the Ford BDAs

in New Zealand proved reliable, relatively inexpensive to run and provided close, exciting racing-

"Once again the Kiwis seem to be showing us the way, just as they did with international racing back in the early fifties.” If Australia does scrap Formula 5000 and adopt Formula Pacific, with a series that ties in with New Zealand’s 1978 season, it will provide a great boost for singleseater racing in the South Pacific. It would probably produce the best Formula Atlantic/Pacific series in the world and drivers would have to fight to qualify for grid positions, because such a series would attract many entries.
