Men strike to retain cook

About 250 rubber workers and 45 engineers employed at the Papanui plant of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Ltd. have voted with their knives and forks to strike until Monday.

The action came after the company declined to discuss conditions of pay affecting a night-shift cook who is a member of the Canterbury Hotel Workers’ Union. The industrial relations manager of the company

(Mr G. P. Davies) said last evening that the cook had been offered a transfer to the day shift, but had declined.

The matter was between the Hotel Workers’ Union and the company. It was a unique situation because the rubber workers’ and engineers’ unions were not involved. The secretary of the

Hotel Workers’ Union (Mr C. McCready) said that he had not been able to contact the cook but he understood that the other workers liked his cooking and were disturbed at the possibilitv that he might quit his job.

He intends to consult the cook and continue discussions with the management today.
