Hockey double trouble

By

KEVIN TUTTY

Two senior hockey teams — University and Redcliffs - - are upset at having to play 1 -e same opponents tomorrow and again on Sunday. University meets Linwood United, and Redcliffs meets Woolston Working Men’s Club in the Canterbury Hockey Association’s preliminary championship tomorrow.

On Sunday they will clash again in the second round of the Philips Cup —■ the national club knock-out competition.

Philips Cup matches can be played as part of a normal club competition, but the national competition rules state this can be done only by mutual consent. Both Linwood and Woolston feel they will be better

served by taking two bites at the cherry. “It is not just because it is University that we are playing twic’e’ said the Linwood president (Mr I. Gordon). “We would piay both days whatever team we were drawn against.” Linwood feels that if it plays poorly tomorrow it might play better on Sunday and have a chance of toppling the brilliant University side. Mr Gordon said the senior team realised this could work in reverse —- Linwood might play well tomorrow and badly on Sunday. “But we have got nothing to lose.” University is an extremely fit team, but Mr Gordon said the Linwood side is also fit, and playing two hard matches in two days should not put it at a disadvantage. Woolston has different,

reasons for wanting to play Redcliffs on Sunday. Its coach, Tom Brennan, said he will be fielding a changed team.

His club has several players capable of making the senior team, but who prefer to play senior reserve in the Saturday competitions. Some of these senior reserve players vzi’l be brought into the team on Sunday, hopefully to strengthen it and give it a chance of making the third round.

“Any mistakes we make against Redcliffs tomorrow should be ironer out before we meet Redcliffs on Sunday,” said Brennan. Naturally the favoured teams — University and Redcliffs — would prefer to play only tomorrow. They can see no benefit from playing the matches on successive days.
