Housing for elderly
A tender has been let for a new $135,000 housing complex for the elderly in Thames Street, St Albans, to be built by the St Albans Baptist Church. The 10 single and double units, Thames Court, which should be finished by the end of the year, will be owned and administered by the Church, but financed by Government grants and loans. It is planned to have six single units and four for married couples. They will be allocated, regardless of denomination, on grounds of need to people aged 60 or over with assets totalling under $5OOO. Church members will be responsible for the residents’ social welfare, and a committee has been set up to deal with applications. There have been three applications so far.
