Glider hits house; pilot killed
PA Auckland A Wellington glider pilot was killed yesterday when his glider crashed into a house at Taupo. He was Frederick Calvert, in his late forties, of Stokes Valley. The occupants of the house, Mrs Judity Mahar, and her daughter aged 15, escaped injurv, but part of the house was badly damaged. According to eye-witnesses, the glider was coming in to land at the Taupo Gliding Club headquarters when it went into a spin. The pilot apparently regained control, but did not have enough height to fly over the house.
The glider crashed through a hedge and hit the ground with one wing, before slewing round and crashing into a bedroom of the house. Officials of the club arrived soon after the crash and were able to lift the pilot clear of the wreckage, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
