New poll in Fiji
NZPA Suva The Governor-General of Fiji (Ratu Sir George Cakobau) yesterday dissolved the Fijian Parliament and ordered a fresh General Election. An announcement from Government House said that the Governor-General was I acting on the advice of the Prime Minister (Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara). The move comes after the defeat of the minority Alliance Government on Tuesday, when the House of Representatives voted 26-23 for an Opposition National Federation Party motion
.seeking the installation of an N.F.P. government. The motion sought this procedure rather than an election if the Prime Minister recommended dissolution of Parliament. But the Gov-ernor-General has chosen to take the course advised by the Prime Minister. The dissolution of Parliament comes only two [months after the General Election which removed the Alliance Party’s comfortable Parliamentary majority in a result which gave neither of the two main parties a clear mandate to govern.
The Alliance won 24 seats to the N.F.P.’s 26, with one Fijian Nationalist and one Independent.
