Spreydon stadium ‘will not meet need*
I The City Council should, be doing more for children) land the elderly in Spreydon, | around Centennial Park, said ! ( Cr Nancy Sutherland on l Tuesday. “These are people who need each other — the very old and the very young, ’ she said. However this need would not be catered for by the park’s proposed sports stadium. The children needed a larger play centre area in Lyttelton street, and the elderly — many of whom lived in the nearby West Spreydon pensioner cottages — wanted a glassed-in place next to the playground “forj sitting and knitting,” shej said. There they could watch i the children. Some meeting place was
.needed where the elderly i could be warm in winter and jcool in summer, because of ‘cold southerly winds round (the pensioner flats. The play centre area — which could be expanded easily — was also required by a private kindergarten at the corner of Sparks Road and Lyttelton Street, which had no outdoor area for its children. Cr Sutherland also asked for a report on the cost of putting a window in the indoor creche at Queen Elizabeth II Park. Because an outdoor creche at the park was too expensive for the i time being, something 'should be done to make the jpresent one more attractive, she said.
