Fawcett on the wing

The controversial and now discarded full-back of the 1976 All Blacks in South Africa, Kit Fawcett, has been chosen as a wing in the New Zeala. d Universities’ XV to play Canterbury at Lancaster Park on June 8.

Fawcett, who is now a teacher at Hamilton, is no stranger to the three-quar-ter line. He played on the wing for Otago in 1975, and also occupied this position regularly on the university side’s grand overseas tour last year. He was top scorer on that tour, with 111 points from eight matches, and kicked 26 points against All Japan in Tokyo. The full-back post in the universities’ team has

been awarded to the deposed Canterbury specialist, Doug Heffernan. He has been preferred to last season’s full-back, Alan Innes (Massey).

Heffernan replaced an injured Fawcett at fullback for the New Zealand Juniors half-way through their internal tour in 1975.

The big full-back is one of seven University of Canterbury players chosen for the side. Paul Macfie, of Lincoln College, is also included. Canterbury and the universities’ team will use the game as a warm-up for their matches against the Lions in Christchurch later this month. The universities XV will also play another opponent of the Lions, the Hanan Shield districts’ team, in Ashburton, on June 11. The universities’ team is:--

M. D. Heffernan (Canterbury); C. L. Fawcett (Waikato), D. T. Fouhy (Victoria), R. F. Scott (Canterbury); D. L. Rollerson (Massey, cap-

tain), P. A. Macfie (Lincoln); M. J. T. Romans (Canterbury); G. W. Elvin (Otago); D. N. Thorn (Auckland), G. J. Brown, P. T. Oliver, R. C. Scott (all Canterbury); G. P. Denholm (Auckland), J. E. Black, J. A. Edmondson (both Canterbury). Reserves.— Backs: A. C. Innes (Massey), A. C. Barton (Canterbury), M. J. Deane (Waikato). Forwards: D. A. Syms (Auckland), M. A. Wright, T. J. Sole (both Massey).
