Domestic purposes benefit
Sir, —To date, correspondence has stressed either the mounting cost to the State, or the financial burdens to be borne by the solo parent, married or unmarried. Very few writers have given thought to the future of the child retained by the young unmarried mother. Too many of their mothers are still in their teens, and have been activated either by a desire for independence, or bv a craving for love (in its true sense) which they transfer to their babies. However, what of tiie children as they grow up? How long will these girls be, content to remain restricted, while their more fortunate. and sensible, contemporaries develop their personalities and their futures? How soon will it be before these hapless babies and young children come to be regarded as a drag and suffer accordingly?—Yours, etc., HARVEY FOSS. May 31, 1977.
