New-look team for netball
The Canterbury netball) team will not be named j until after the South Island) tournament at Ashburton on I June 12. A squad of 12 players was chosen two weeks ago to prepare for a game against North Shore at Queen’s Birthday week-end. The selectors (Miss Cath Brown, Mrs Sue Morten and Mrs Margaret Simeonidis) intended selecting the nine players for the national tournament by the end of last week. However, a mix-up over dates means the game against North Shore will not be played until June 25. “This means we have more time up our sleeves.” said the coach (Miss Brown). “All players from the squad will be used during the South Island tournament.” Teams from Nelson, South Canterbury and Otago will also participate in the tournament, which Canterbury has dominated for several years. Miss Brown hopes the team will repeat the success this year. The game against North Shore has been arranged as I part of North Shore’s jubilee celebrations. It should be an even match, as North Shore was runner-up to Canterbury and Wellington, the co-win-ners of the national tourna-1 ment, last year.
I The Westlake club jNorth Shore beat Technics lin the final of the New Zealand netball club championship last year, denying th;; [Canterbury side its thiid I national club title. [ Through retirements an 4 transfers. only three members of last year's Canterbury team are in the squad [this year. It still looks strong in defence, however, [with Technical’s Maxino [Blomquist in superb form iand the Burnside goal, keeper, Katrina Milicich, a former Otago representative, who has played brilliantly in club games so far this season. Miss Brown says her task is to build a solid mid-court combination, and she hai been experimenting with different players in the centre and wing attack positions. “We won’t know how well the players can perform until we play other provincial teams, but at the moment I’m reasonably happy,'* she said.
