Queensland campaign for Oranmore likely
NZPA Sydney A Queensland campaign for the New Zealand sprinter. Oranmore. has still not been ruled out. The horse’s new Australian trainer Alan Bailey, said yesterday. Bailey said that although Oranmore was not an acceptor for the Stradbroke Handicap, he had been entered for the 1100,000 Doomben Ten Thousand to be run over 1350 m on July 2. Oranmore had his first Australian success at his eighth start in Sydney on Saturday when he won the 1200 m Homestead Handicap at Warwick Farm. Bailey said that in the heavy going he had been pleased at Oranmore’s time .of Imin 11.8 sec. He had improved by "a couple of lengths” on his run over the same distance at Rosehill the previous week.
"We are going to take him along quietly for a while,” he said. "He has had a fairly full programme and could be ready for a spell. We will just have to see if we can keep him fresh.” Bailey said Oranmore would continue to run in sprint events. Although some thought I had been given to trying him over a longer distance there were, he said, more suitable sprint races about at present. Oranmore would probably contest the $BOOO Pacesetters Stakes over 1200 m at Gosforth on June 7. and the 1200 m June Stakes I at Randwick. I Bailey said if Oranmore. which is owned by Mr and Mrs Joe Doran, of Paeroa, was spelled, there would seem to be little point in his returning to New Zealand, as the weights he would be expected to carry would be prohibitive.
