Trip tip for topping-off holiday

For those wanting to do something out of the ordinary, a trip up Tomanivi (Mount Victoria) is in order. Tomanivi, the highest point in the Fiji Islands, is 1323 metres above sea level. The approach to the Tomanivi track is from Navai village. Take a bus from Tavua to Navai, and ask a villager to show you the start of the track. The first part of the track is fairly flat. After crossing two streams, continue over the fence and begin a gradual climb up bush-clad spur. ■ ■ Upon reach the main ridge, the track steepens. A bit of scrambling in this final section brings one to the summit. If clear, the view is tremendous. The actual walking time from the village to the summit should take about two hours. — KATHY ULVANG
