Concorde stopped again
NZPA-Reuter New York The operators of Kennedy Airport in New York have won a week’s respite in their legal battle to keep the supersonic Concorde off their runways. The U.S. Court of Appeals has extended a temporary ban on Concorde flights to Kennedy until next Wednesday — when it will hear an appeal from airport authorities against a lower court
: ruling that the Anglo-French, plane should be allowed to ! ’ fly in for a 16-month trial period. i Then the Port Authority : of New York and New Jer- ’ sey, operators of the airport, will argue that it alone has i the right to decide which ■ planes can use Kennedy, the i “gateway” to the United, • States for aircraft from Eur-i i ope. The decision on Tuesday . took Air France and British
Airways, the only airlines flying Concorde, by surprise. But a spokesman for Air France, which plans to begin a scheduled Concorde service to New York by June 20, said that the latest court delay would not necessarily force the airline to postpone beginning its flights. The case is expected to go to the Supreme Court no matter which side wins next week’s hearing.
