Police net seven in early raids
Several persons were arrested in their homes yesterday morning as the police swooped on addresses in Christchurch. A squad of more than 30 uniformed and plainclothes policemen took part in the raids. They were looking mainly for receivers of stolen property, and persons for whom magistrates had issued warrants of arrest.
Among the places surrounded by the police was the Armagh Street headquarters of the Devil’s Henchmen motor-cycle gang.
The seven arrested as a result of the raids spent last night in the cells at the Christchurch Central Police Station, and will appear in the Magistrate’s Court today. Detective Inspector N. J. Stokes described the raids as “fairly ■outine.” “We make these visits from time to every few months,” he said. ■ /
