‘Top of World’ goes under
By ROBIN TURKEL “Top of the World,” South Pacific Television’s M o n d a y-night variety show, is being dropped. There were to have been two series — an initial 14 half-hours, followed by 14 one-hour shows. Because of a budget squeeze and the effects of a new agreement with Actors Equity, S.P.T. announced last week that the first series was cut to nine shows, and the second was being “re-thought.” Now the plan for a second series has been abandoned, and the show will end after the ninth in the
present series — on June 20. “Top of the World” had been budgeted about $7500 a show, but was running closer to $lO,OOO. A onehour version was estimated to cost about $15,000. The series team is bitterly disappointed, and resignations are being discussed. Two other formats are being prepared to replace the show. The successor will use as much “Top of the World” talent as possible, but overseas stars will not be a feature as they have been.
