Most store stock in steady demand

Addington Market

Most classes of store stock had quite a satisfactory sale at the Addington Market yesterday. Although the end of the season is now in sight, there were good buying galleries. Good store wether lambs, particularly Romneys, showed a lift in value, and the calf market also ran at a stronger level.

Store lambs Store lambs often had a stronger sale. This week’s yarding of 1280 head ineluded a useful selection of woolly Romneys, and these were fully 50c to 60c better than last week. Other wether lambs were at all stages fully firm. Some woolly Romneys from ’Banks Peninsula fetched $13.50, and there were several other sales at $l2 a head or more. Useful carry-over lambs sold at $7.50 to $9, with tail-end lots down to $5. Ewe lambs sold much at wether lamb rate, one of th e main sales being a line of woolly Romneys at $12.10. Sales of store lambs included:— Eva Price Partnership (Poranui), 152 woolly Romney wethers at $13,50, 69 woolly Romnev ewes at $12.10. Only two pens of breeding ewes were offered. A pen of mixedaged Romneys, mated at the end of April, fetched $lO.lO, and some back-country halfbreds fetched $8.40. Store calves Store calves had a verv sound sale. The yarding of 690 head was one of wide variety. It ranged from small back-country calves to forward well-grown lots from Banks Peninsula. For an end-of-season sale, there was a good gallery, and the market was generally a little stronger. A comparison with this sale last year, when the calf market fell to its lowest ebb, showed that some calves w-ere as much as 50 per cent stronger. Good Angus-cross steer calves sold to $61.50 while small Herefords from the high country ranged from $2B to $4O. With added competition from butchers the heifer calf market made a revival. Some calves from the Buller district fetched top price of $55, and there were other sales at more than $4O. Compared with last week, the market for heifers was easily $5 to $6 stronger. Small heifers continued to sell at $25 to $32. Sales of store calves included:— Steers: St James Station (Han- ; mer Springs), 37 Angus-cross and Hereford at $35 to $6O; O. J. Hodgkinson (Murchison), 20 at $46 to $56; P. D. H. Bush (Par-

Hodgkinson (Murchison). 20 at $39 to $55: St James Station | (Haunter Springs). 46 Angus cross and Hereford at $3O to $44.50. Store cat lie Although store cattle were by no means expensive buying, the market was quite good lor so late in the season. Values were fully up to the rates paid last week. One of the features of the steer sale was a line of adult Angus cross from North Canterbury at $l2l to $135. The best of the 20-month-old cattle sold to $llB, while average steers ranged from $B7 to $95, and small down to $7O. This week’s sale included the annual line of heifers from the St James Station (Hanmer Springs). Although competition was rather restricted, the 118 head sold at $67.50 to $lOl for an average of $75.50. Last year’s line in comparison, ranged from $4O to $BB. The fact that the cattle market, although not strong, remains distinctly better than a year ago, was again demonstrated in the breeding cow section. The annual line of cast-for-age Angus cross and Hereford cows from St James Station ranged from $67.50 to $lO2, for an average of $78.50. Last year’s line averaged a modest $66, with a top price of $9O.
