Snatched purse
“In my book this type of offence calls for some sort of detention. It amounts to hooliganism,” said Mr F, G. Paterson in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when he sen tenced Shane Patrick Duff; to periodic detention for four months on a charge of the theft of a purse. Duffy, an apprentice signwriter, was charged with the theft of the purse from an elderly woman who was waiting at an intersection in Colombo Street. The defendant came up behind the woman and snatched the purse. He was apprehended soon after.
The defendant told the Court he had been drinking before committing what was [an impulsive act. j In addition to the detention sentence Duffy was released on probation for 1? months.
