N.A.F.T.A. not at fault
PA Wellington The Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schnei-der) has said that N.A.F.T.A. agreements could not be blamed for staff dismissals in the clothing industry. “People who use the N.A.F.T.A. apparel arrangement as an excuse for laying off staff are distorting the facts,” the Minister said. “New Zealand’s former exemption from Australia’s global apparel quotas allowed us to build up exports totalling nearly four million garments last year,” Mr Adams-Schneider said. “Most of this was new business for the garment inIdustry and it must have created jobs for around 2000 I people. “The N.A.F.T.A. apparel i arrangement, which allows ■New Zealand to send the 1 same volume of apparel as ;iast year, safeguards these jobs,” the Minister said.
Mr Adams-Schneider accused the secretary of the Clothing Workers’ Union (Mr F. Thorn) of being irresponsible for suggesting that almost a quarter of the total number of people employed in the industry would lose their jobs simply because the industry was unable to expand its sales in Australia this year.
