Reinsmen’s contest
As far as three young reinsmen are concoerned, the stresses associated with driving in races such as the New Zealand Cup will apply In the Ram Stakes, a race for Cl pacers at Addington Raeewav on Friday.
The race is the final leg of the Maurice Holmes Trophy, a competition run throughout the season at Addington Raceway. The prize, a fortnight in Melbourne, ' goes to the young man most i successful in probationary drivers’ races. ' At the moment Peter Jones I leads the competition with 24 [ points, one more than. Fraser I Kirk, with a further single I point back to Colin de Filippi, j Jones will drive First Eni counter, trained by his father, | while Kirk will drive Butler [Belle, trained by Ray Jones at Ashburton, and de Filippi has been engaged for Butler’s Lady, a member of Murray Purdon's team at Southbridge. Butler Belle, with two seconds and two fourths from her last! four starts, is the form runner, although Butler’s Lady, with! three thirds in her last four! starts, and First Encounter with I a second, a fourth and a seventh i in Ills four most recent appearances, also have much to recommend them. The driver of the winner of Friday’s race will receive four points, while three, two and one will be awarded to the drivers of the next three to finish. While the outcome of the race looks anything but certain, there is little doubt that the horses of Jones. Kirk and de Filippi will be the three favourites for the event.
