New C.S.B. president

The new president of the Canterbury Savings Bank is Mr I. D. Howell, who has been on the board for the last two years. Mr Howell, who was elected president at the board’s annual meeting on Monday evening, has been deputy president since May last year. He is an active businessman and director of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association.

The growth of the C.S.B. was a matter of pride, Mr Howell said, as it reflected the public confidence and support for the bank. “In 16 years, it has achieved the status of being the second-largest trustee savings bank in New Zealand, after Auckland, whose trustee bank has been established more than 100 years,” he said.

“Considering also the disparity between population growths and commercial activities in the two regions, this is a tremendous achievement.”

Mr Howell said that, to keep up with developments in computer technology, the board had agreed to send its general manager of the bank (Mr F. Dickson) to the United States in June to study the latest trends with computers, meet officers of other banking organisations, and obtain an insight into changing social patterns affecting banking services.
