C.I.A. and N.Z.
Sir, — Though it is hard to make out what your editorial is trying to say (“The Press,” May 24), enough can be deciphered to deduce that it misses the point of the controversy over the C.l.A.’s presence in New Zealand. The C.l.A.’s presence in any country' — ally of the United States or not —- is a threat to the democratic balance within that country. The C.l.A.’s job is to spy on and undermine organisations
which might threaten the rule of the most Right-wing, hawkish elements. Since the C.I.A. would obviously be a supporter of the Muldoon Government, and since Mr Muldoon has scarcely shown himself to be a staunch defender of open government and democratic liberties, the suggestion that the matter is some sort of arrangement to be discussed in private between Mr Muldoon and President Carter is merely to advocate the sort of anti-demo-cratic, secret government that “The Press,” regrettably, has shown no tendency to oppose. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) R. J. COLLINS. May 24, 1977.
