Numerical control
Numerically controlled machine tools are becoming a standard fixture in many New Zealand workshops. Yet one of the problems has been that traditional manual programming methods have not always been sufficient to make the most of numerical control. Mace Engineering of Christchurch expects to eliminate this problem by using a full-scale computer to programme its numerically controlled tools. The company has purchased an 1.8. M. System 3 Model 8 computer and one of the main functions of the machine will be to
control the N.C. machinery. “Our ineications are that N.C. use will more than pay for the machine,” says Mace Engineering General Manager, Mr Fed Mace. Mace Engineering will prepare the punch paper tape input for their two N.C. milling/drilling machines and also their two N.C. lathes with the System 3. Mr Mace expects that the computerised numerical control will make considerable savings in programming time and also reduce errors.
