Rare tie in badminton round

A tie is a rare thing in badminton, but it badminton, but it happened in the sixth round of the A grade interClub competition in the Skellerup Hall on Saturday — when Canterbury I and North Beach II were deadlocked at four matches, 10 sets, and 209 points apiece. The contest was level pegging throughout. Charles Wasley, the top Canterbury I player, upset Mike Nolan, eighth-ranked in the province, but John Anderson squared the singles by beating Paul Wilson comfortably.

Similarly, in the women’s singles, Christine Reay scored her sixth successive victory for Canterbury, but Gillian Ellis beat the Canterbury second player, Lyn O’Hara, in three sets.

The mixed doubles were shared, both matches going to three sets. Canterbury gained a big advantage when Misses Reay and O’Hara completely dominated the doubles against Robyn Erskine and Miss Ellis. They lost just one point, in the first set, and conceded none in the second.

As expected, Nolan and Anderson gave North Beach II its fourth win, but the seven points that Wasley and Wilson won in each set proved vital. After a double check, the two teams could not be separated, even on points. Railway and North Beach I continued to draw clear from their eight rivals. Railway had its second successive 8-0 win and has 78 points, from a maximum 84. North Beach is only three points in arrears, after a convincing win against the third-placed Knox. The formidable Railway combination was far too strong for Canterbury 11. The only glimmer of hope for Canterbury II came in the women’s doubles, when Nui Jacobs and Audrey Smith won the second game against Glenys Waller and

Pat Duckmanton in setting, but the unbeaten Railway pair made no mistake in the third game. Hagley lost only one match against University. Peter Curtain, who had won his five previous singles at No. 2 for Hagley I, found the agile Chong Chin Jin, University’s top man, too strong, and succumbed in straight games. A feature of the KnoxNorth Beach I fixture was the clash between Peter Whiting, the Canterbury No. 1, and Warren Edgecumbe, the province’s third seed. Whiting, with hard-hit and astutely placed smashes, held a comfortable lead in the first game before Edgecumbe, a tireless chaser, levelled at 10-all.

However, Whiting made fewer mistakes in the final rallies for the game. Edgecumbe’s exuberance and better control gave him the second game, but Whiting showed the better touch in the deciding game, which he won, 15-11. Ann Chambers (Knox), the beaten finalist in the Canterbury Anzac tournament, was well beaten by Sue Chapman, and Knox’s lone success was scored by Edgecumbe and Janet Miles, against the previously unbeaten Whiting and Alison Ross.

The bottom team, South Brighton, was no match for Hagley II and failed to win a match, although two doubles went to the deciding game. Paul Boatwood was hard-pressed by the South Brighton No. 1, Glen McWilliams, in the top singles. McWilliams and his doubles partners won the first games, but bowed to their opposition in the next two games. Points: Railway 78, North Beach I 75, Haglev I 58.
