' Mind-expanding’ print show
From different angles, shapes and forms in prints by the Dutch artist, M. C. Escher, took on new dimensions, which- changed to suit the perspective of the viewer, said Dr D. F. Robinson, senior lecturer in mathematics at the University of Canterbury. Dr Robinson, who was speaking at the opening of a two-week exhibition of McDougall Art Gallery on Thursday evening, said that if eever'any artist was truly psychedelic — in the sense of mind-expanding — then Escher was that artist. Fifty prints by Escher are in the exhibition, which has been brought to New Zealand by Philips Electrical Industries, Ltd, from the collection
of the M, C. Escher Foundation. The exhibition is part of a programme to celebrate the fiftieth year that Philips, a Dutch company, has been established in New Zealand. After June 2, the exhibition will move to Dunedin, to end its tour of the four main centres. Cr H. L. Garrett, representing the Christchurch City Council, who helped organise the opening of the exhibition, and Mr D. Hewitt, the regional manager of Philips in the South Island, also spoke ait the opening. A three-piece music group, Bachanaiia, played while guests viewed the prints.
