‘Mini-motorways’
Sir. — The report on •‘mini-motorways” (“The Press.” May 10) correctly anticipates the likely reaction of residents in the north of the city to such a scheme. This new “creeping motorway-ism” is almost identical to the plan proposed in the Second Transport Study, in which the motorway would be a single carriageway initially, but ultimately a dual carriageway. Whether a community is cut -in two by a wide road or a narrow road is of little concern to that community — their concern is that the community is cut in two. The study, conceived before the energy crisis, assumes virtually unlimited growth of motor transport. Is this still realistic? It also dismisses alternative forms of transport. How accurate is this assumption? Surely, in a time of economic downturn, the time is ripe to look for alternatives which cost less and disrupt less. — Yours, etc., ROGER WILSON. May IQ, 1977.
