Ski snobbery

Sir, — The ski-ing season is approaching and I would like to voice my disgust concerning the pseudo status attached to the sport. The inference I gain from skigear advertising and from the social snobbery of the “upper class” ski-ing fraternity is that “you are a good skier only in the right gear.” This gear includes high-class skis, clothing and vehicles. Many people can ski well and enjoy themselves in a parka and a cheap pair of skis, but yet ski advertising implies that they are not good skiers and would be regarded as “lower class” by those with the expensive gear. Is the sport of ski-ing to become a status symbol and the amount of enjoyment derived, dependent on the expense of your equipment? — Yours, etc., GREG SEYMOUR. May 2, 1977.
