Third big ’quake

NZPA-Reuter Washington A third strong earthquake struck the Solomon Islands in the south-western Pacific yesterday, the United States Geological Survey reports. It said that its earthquake information service in Golden, Colorado, had measured the latest earthquake at 7.7 on the open-ended Richter scale and had placed its centre on Guadalcanal Island, scene of bitter World War II fighting between American and Japanese forces.

Late on Wednesday two strong earthquakes rocked the area around the island. Only one person was killed. The first earthquake measured 6.7 on the Richter scale. This was followed by an aftershock and then by a larger earthquake with an intensity of 7.4 on the scale, a survey spokesman said.
