Disco dance championships tonight
Tonight at 10 p.m. the South Island Disco dance championships will be judged during a sponsored competition held at the Stables nightclub.
Music Will be provided by 3ZM’s live disco throughout the two-hour dance competition.
The winning disco-dance couple will be flown to Auckland next month for the national championships, and will receive prizes of record albums, as will many other contestants.
Dancers will be judged by representatives from the Maggie Burke Dancers, 3ZM and Phonogram. They will be looking for the best couple — whether it be a male and a female or two females, or two males. What is most important is the dancing.
.Live broadcasts will be made by 3ZM from the radio car every now and then, to keep listeners up to date with the progress of the competition.
The nightclub will charge for admission as usual after 8 p.m. when it opens on Friday, but there will be no extra charge to enter the disco dance competition.
Patrons will be free to either watch the dancing or to take part, whichever they wish.
The competition should prove popular with the city’s youth, who should welcome the opportunity to display their exuberant spirits on the dance floor.
Although there is no set movement for the disco dance — almost anything goes as long as it conforms to the beat — no doubt couple aboe to “bump” well should stand a good chance of success.
It’s bound to be an exciting and exhausting night for those taking part in the competition and the winners will need to take things pretty easy before they go to Auckland to compete in the final.
