Jail crowding 'not serious’

Overcrowding at Addington Prison is not yet critical, according to the Superintendent of Christchurch Prisons (Mr H. S. Stroud). He was commenting yesterday on reports of security problems at the prison since probation officers placed a total ban on supplying court reports. - Earlier this week, 68 prisoners were being held on ■remand at Addington. The prison normally accommo■dates between 50 and 60; it was designed to hold 25. This week’s figure was well below the record for the prison, said Mr Stroud.

.More than 75 prisoners had been held at Addington several times in the past,

with only minor inconvenience to inmates and warders. "But it is a bit cramped at the moment, and the numbers mean that the routine work such as serving meals is a little slower," Mr Stroud said.

He said the probation officers’ ban was probably only partly responsible for the present overcrowding at Addington.

“A few might be here because a magistrate could not get a probation report, but our numbers normally fluctuate from time to time.” said Mr Stroud.

If the situation at Addington worsened, some inmates would be transferred to Paparua Prison, he said.
