Mini 7 racing in S.I.?
Mini Sevens, the fast little racing cars that are popular on North Island tracks, could be seen on circuits in the South Island next season. Two Christchurch drivers, John Dymand and Laurie Bruce, are campaigning to have Mini Sevens introduced into the Open Saloon Car Association’s competition in place of the present 0-1500 cu. cm class.
They saw some Mini Seven action in the North Island recently and were impressed by the close racing. At some meetings up to 38 drivers were trying to qualify for championship races.
Dymand said this week there were at least 10 drivers in Chrsitchurch and six in Dunedin interested in racing Mini Sevens in the South Island and more were sure to be interested if the formula caught on. “It’s possible to put a Mini Seven on the track for about $1000,” he said. “You can buy a Mini for about $4OO and if you don’t go overboard with all the super-tricky gear you can do it pretty cheaply.” Mini Sevens are only permitted to run steel wheels, one Weber carburettor as well as some head modifications and an extractor.
Dymand said that anyone interested in the new class should contact either him or Laurie Bruce at their Motormarket in Ferry Roads
